My name is Mar Prutton, a current graduate student in the Couples and Family Therapy program at the University of Oregon. I currently facilitate a Self-Harm Support Group here and I also volunteer as a research assistant under Dr. Tiffany Brown.

Tiffany Brown is the principal investigator for two studies about self-harm- “Family Perspectives of Self-Harm” and “The Experiences of Simultaneous Self-Harm and Substance Abuse.” The aim of the first study is to gain a greater understanding of the way that self-harm impacts relationships within family systems as it is seen from the perspective of the family members. Specifically, the study will ask qualitative questions that pertain to the participants’ perspective of self-harm, how the self-harm developed, and recursive impacts.We are looking for individuals (aged 18 or older) who are willing to contribute to research to help us understand the perspective of family members, friends, or partners who care about someone who currently self-harms or has a history of self-harming behaviors.
Participants who complete the interview (approximately 90 minutes) will be entered into a drawing to receive
one of two $25 Fred Meyer gift cards  determined at the completion of the study.

The aim of the second study is to explore the relationship between the recoveries from self-harm and substance abuse via qualitative interviews. The study is grounded in the following questions: What is the experience of those recovering from both self-harm and substance abuse? Does the recovery from self-harm and substance abuse have similar qualities? Does the recovery from self-harm and substance abuse require similar or different recovery strategies? You qualify for participation in this study if all of the following: You qualify for participation in this study if all of the following statements apply:
1. You are 18 years or older.
2. You have historically engaged in self-harming behavior and substance abuse
3. It has been 3 months or longer since the last incident of substance abuse
4. You have historically attempted and/or been successful with recovery from self-harm Participants who complete the interview (approximately 90 minutes) will be entered into a drawing to receive
one of two $25 Fred Meyer gift cards  determined at the completion of the study.
