Title: Ministering to and Treating Self-Injurers: Bridging the Gap Between Pastoral Counselors and Those They Serve

My name is Danielle Archer and I am a doctoral degree student conducting a research project on the experience of pastoral counselors who have treated individuals who have or are currently engaging in self-injuring behaviors. This is part of the requirements for the Doctor of Education degree (EdD) in Pastoral Community Counseling at Argosy University.  My dissertation chair is Dr. Thomas Vail. The purpose of this study is to help pastoral counselors to become more educated and/or equipped to minister to and treat members of the community engaging in self-injury. Additionally, the results will be used to determine the most appropriate forms of future care for self-injurers by pastoral counselors as well as increase collaboration between pastoral counselors and the individuals they serve.

If you participate in this research, you will be asked to complete a demographic information worksheet, at the conclusion of which you will be provided an opportunity to coordinate a telephonic interview with the researcher to allow for a deeper exploration of your experience in working with individuals who self-harm. Choosing to participate in this research will not cause any known potential risks or discomforts to the participants.

Your participation in the demographic information worksheet will take approximately 20 to 30 minutes, and will be provided to you via email. Your participation in the telephonic interview will take approximately 1 – 2 hours. The telephonic interviews will be audio recorded to maintain the integrity and accuracy of your responses. Your participation in this research is strictly voluntary. You may refuse to participate at all, or choose to stop your participation at any point in the research, without fear of penalty or negative consequences of any kind.
The information/data you provide for this research will be treated confidentially, and all raw data will be kept in a secured file by the principal investigator. Results of the research will be reported as aggregate summary data only, and no individually identifiable information will be presented. Upon completion of this study, all materials collected (audio and written) shall be destroyed.
