Even though it is self inflicted, it is traumatic not 2 b able 2 trust ur self, being n such a state that u would harm ur self 4 relief, the impact it has on our lives, the reaction we get, the scars, the whole thing, at least it has been traumatic 4 me.
Even though there is trauma related, SI really is not, its just a coping mechanism for trauma. That’s all it is. It’s the thing you go through to lead you so far that is the trauma, and the SI is that one choice that leads to the addictive, disease-like behavior. SAFE’s book teaches us that SI is not an addiction, disease, but a choice, and we have the ability to stop and to seek help and hope, because it’s most definitely there.
I believe that SI can be traumatic. It can certainly be a way someone chooses to recreate trauma that they have experienced in the past. While it may temporarily help people (in an unhealthy way) to express some emotions, in general it is something traumatic done to the body.
Rescue is completely accurate about how SAFE believes that SI is not an addiction but a choice. Hopefully through time and getting help/support, those who injure can make healthier and longer lasting positive choices. It’s hard, but it can be done. We all need support once in a while. 🙂
