I was SI since about 1996 when I was discharged from the Navy and ended up in a VA hospital for almost 2 years in 2001. They had never really dealt with SI at the VA hospital, so most of it was hit-and-miss with treatment. Mostly just compassion and LOTS of talking. I wrote just about everything down (5 books full of writing). They kept saying that it will pass, and of course I didn’t believe them. They kept me safe and talking about it for almost 7 years now. I had never heard of SI before, didn’t even know that anyone else did it. I thought I was some sort of “freak”, but in time I grew to understand what was going on, and that I wasn’t alone. I think that was the scariest part. Being alone with it. I still have urges, of course, but I’ve found that re-reading what I had written when it was really bad helps a lot. I hope everyone feels better soon. Remember: This too shall pass.
